Blue Man Group
Dear Jonah,

Given your response to the Train video of the other night, and Nihls Frahm's piano by toilet brush, I have decided that you need a brief expansion in your music video repertoire.

As Brendan and I are watching the CMAs, I will make up categories for these.

Technical Difficulty
Channel: OK Go (which you have apparently already heard of)
Video: Maroon 5 - Sugar (background notes, click here)

Unique Instruments
Blue Man Group: NPR Tiny Desk (because you love these), and The Complex Tour (I have this CD, and possibly the DVD also)
Wintergatan: Marble Machine

In Any Language
Chino y Nacho: Mi Voy Enamorando
Ahmed Chawki: Habibi I Love You

The Storytellers
Camila Cabello: Havana
Michael Jackson: Thriller

These aren't so much great videos as impressive performances:
Loopy
Ed Sheeran: Wayfaring Stranger (though he's done a solo tour using all loop songs)
Pharrell Williams: Happy (trombone loop version)

That Voice Though
Alabama Shakes - Hold On
George Ezra - Did You Hear the Rain (this Glastonbury performance was the first time I heard him, and I've been hooked ever since)

And the computer is about to die, so this will end my brief list of a few favorites.

  1. Holy crap, that was a good list!! Thoughts below

OK Go - I watched their one moment video, and that was probably the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen.
Maroon 5 - Sugar - I wonder how much was staged and who all knew that the band would be playing? Still, really cute idea.

Blue Man Group: NPR Tiny Desk - Jeeze, how have I never seen this before? Actually, come to think of it I don’t recall ever listening to Blue Man Group, and I don’t think I realized the amount of instruments they’ve made!! That was super fun to watch, and the Mediation part was hilarious!
Wintergatan: Marble Machine - I swear I had seen this before, but still. How does someone think of inventing that crap? Genius, and all that work for one song!

Chino y Nacho: Mi Voy Enamorando - cute, I didn’t understand a word of it but the story was nice.
Ahmed Chawki: Habibi I Love You - My only comment is the shots of him on the beach make him look like Jeff Goldblum from The Lost World. I’ll keep others to myself….

Camila Cabello: Havana - LOL. I did not expect that. I had to pause it four-five times because I was laughing so hard at the intro piece. Whoever wrote that deserves an award, seriously.
Michael Jackson: Thriller - Again, I don’t ever remember watching this? Zombie make-up on point however.

Ed Sheeran: Wayfaring Stranger - That’s pretty good. I have a bunch of loop videos I should share in another post...
Pharrell Williams: Happy - This guy killed it, I wonder how many takes it took, lol.

    Alabama Shakes - Hold On
George Ezra - Did You Hear the Rain (Both) Gosh, I wish I could sing like that. I’ll be watching more of these folks, especially George.
I’ll have to write a follow-up post to this of live performances I love (don’t have many music videos in my library).

    Again, good list. 10/10

  2. Sugar - I should have clarified better - the "notes" explain who knew what. Basically, the groom and the event coordinator at each wedding knew, and that was it. That's what makes it so legit. They did two takes of Sugar, played another song or two privately for the wedding party, then moved on.

Blue Man Group is my favorite!!! Technically, they aren't a musical group, per say - they're performance art. They have theaters in Chicago, Las Vegas, and a few other cities. and I HIGHLY recommend seeing them live if you ever get the chance. Melody (my sister) and I got to see them in Chicago when I was in college. But yes, their musicality is phenomenal. The whipsticks are my favorite - so simple but so hard!

Habibi - lol. Point on this one wasn't whether or not you like the music, but could you track with the story even though you couldn't understand the words?

Havana - I get a huge smile just thinking about this one!
Thriller - While I personally don't like Michael Jackson music, his skills as an entertainer are legendary, as are his videos. This one is one of the most well known videos of all time, and now you know why.

Yes please on the loop videos. I prefer some of Sheeran's other songs, but this one shows the loping really well. There's a concert that I can't find on YouTube where he does the entire show solo, just with loops. Brilliant.

George Ezra is the guy who does Budapest, my karaoke song. :D I can't get enough of his voice, or Brittany's (the lead singer of Alabama Shakes). Tracy Chapman is another you might like. Say Hallelujah is one of my favorite songs of all time, but it doesn't have a coolio video: https://youtu.be/y2VEXH0BnjM
